On Your Back
The best sleeping position for preventing back and neck pain is sleeping flat on your back. When you sleep on your back, your weight is distributed along the length of your spine and your spine is kept in proper alignment. Some people find it difficult to sleep in this position but placing a pillow under your knees can help improve comfort.
On Your Side with Your Legs Stretched Out
Sleeping on either your right or left side with your legs stretched out is an acceptable alternative to sleeping on your back. You can put a thin pillow between your legs to help align your hips, pelvis, and spine. The pillow you use should only be thick enough to create a straight line from your head through your spine.
On Your Side with Your Legs Curled
This position is less ideal. It doesn’t provide adequate spinal support to maintain spinal alignment in the shoulders and neck. It also doesn’t evenly distribute your weight throughout your body.
